7th Annual ‘American Downtown’ Celebration
The seventh annual “American Downtown” 4th of July celebration will feature its first nighttime parade and a new location for live music and other festivities.
The free community event will kick off at 3 p.m. Thursday, July 4, in the new amphitheater of Walters State Community College. Live music and kids activities will be followed by the Andrew Johnson Bank Parade, launching at sunset from Towne Square Shopping Center and ending at Greeneville High School.
When the last entry of the parade arrives at GHS, a spectacular fireworks show will be launched from the hill behind Burley Stadium, according to organizer Amy Rose, the town’s Public Relations Manager.
“We’ve heard a lot of requests for a nighttime parade, and we think it will be both amazing to watch and more comfortable than the afternoon temperatures in previous years,” Rose said.
ANDREW JOHNSON THEME
American Downtown is one of the 2019 events celebrating the 150th anniversary of President Andrew Johnson’s return from Washington back home to Greeneville.
Upon his return, President Johnson said, “There’s No Place Like Home,” which will be the official theme for this year’s American Downtown celebration, Rose said.
Parade Grand Marshals will be local reenactors Tim Massey and Caroline Blanks, portraying President Johnson and his daughter Martha.
Andrew Johnson themed games will be part of the many activities in the Computer Pros Kids Zone.
LIVE MUSIC, FOOD
The Waste Industries Main Stage will feature a variety of local and regional talent from 3 p.m. until launch of the parade.
Performers include rap and hip-hop artist 7 Figgaz, bluegrass gospel group Strong Ties, and The Flying J’s, also known as John Brown and John Price.
A variety of food vendors will be on site throughout the celebration.
Returning by popular demand will be the Top Dog Hot Dog Eating Contest, sponsored by Tony Jones Termite & Pest Control.
Additional sponsors of American Downtown include Gold Level: Ballad Health, Gateway Ford Lincoln Nissan, and Marsh Propane; Silver Level: Apex Bank, Forward Air, General Morgan Inn, Greeneville Federal Bank, Greeneville Light & Power System, Greeneville Oil & Petroleum, Meco Corporation; and Bronze Level: Consumer Credit Union, Food City, Greeneville Real Estate & Auction Team (G.R.E.A.T.), Heritage Community Bank, John Deere Power Products, Summers-Taylor, and Walmart Logistics, along with The Beard Guy & Friends Beard Co.
